Waikato/Bay of Plenty – Omanu Golf Club 2020

Friday the 16th of October back over the hill at the Omanu Golf Club in Mount Maunganui in the Bay of Plenty. Again absolutely blessed with a cracker day with brilliant blue skies with no clouds and very little wind. Plenty of sun tan location required that’s for sure.

This year with no National Tournament we decided to just have an Ambrose fun day with no individual section. With everyone being very busy with getting back to business after the whole Covid lock down we didn’t really know what sort of response we would get from the industry. Again I was blown away with the fabulous response from around our whole Waikato Bay of Plenty region from very generous sponsors and from players both old (played in previous years just to clarify Rexy) and new, about 40 newbie’s this year. WOW, again we, as a committee, were not expecting such a positive response. We started with a 25 team cap but pushed it open to let everyone in that wanted to play so no one missed out. Even a team from Auckland, and possible potential sponsors from Frucor, came down from the big smoke to see how it we ran our tournie. This resulted in our biggest ever field since 2007. A massive field of 32 teams with 128 players. Again the Team Ambrose has turned out to be a master stoke for the tournament in our region. Although there were thoughts and comments about the possibility of slow play with such a large field all was completed well under 5 hours with no major choke points or anyone waiting for long. So a great effort all round by the committee and all the players on the day.

Sponsorship was again brilliant. On the back of Covid the sponsorship was still fabulous. Without the Champion Companies listed below tournaments like this just couldn’t happen. Although I am the National Sponsorship Coordinator for the NZ Electrical Trades organization I’m continually surprised and at times overwhelmed with the generosity of these companies and the great support they give not only the WBOP tournie but all the other 9 regions as well.

So I know it goes without saying, but please support these fantastic companies below whenever you can.

The Champions from Hugo Lighting for supplying the refreshments on the drinks cart. Well needed on such a cracker day. And for donating the major raffle prize of a home and business starter lighting pack. Cheers muchly Wendy.

Roxanne and the team from ETCO. Great set up on the 10th tee and some greater sugary snacks to keep us moving along.

The Team at JA Russells for letting us use their meeting rooms for our committee meetings and for also coordinating with a number of the suppliers as they enter the branches.

Super Extra Special thanks to…. Pam (legend) from Legrand for not only organizing to borrow the Corys BBQ Trailer, but also picking it up, towing into position on the golf course and to top it off cooking it as well along with “the boss” from EMAC Electrical Jeanette.

Again a special thanks you to all the sponsors from the whole WBOP Committee. You are all legends. Cheers

Prize Winners. There were 14 team prizes in all and below are the top 5 teams.

After an initial enquiry by the stewards it was The Fore Skins that were at the pointy end of the field with a Gross score of 61 and Nett 54.5. A great effort by the usual burglars of Roy Hyland, Lance Staiger, Jason Ross and Andrew Dykstra.

2nd: Webber Refrigeration and HVAC. Gross 64. Nett 55.875. Jared Koningsveld, Andy Kirk, Brad Nickel, Keegan Cook.

3rd: The Fact Hunts. Gross 63. Nett 58.375. Mike Wood, Steve Jarvis, Josh Evemy, Kris Tocker.

4th: TA GC’s. JA Russell’s Te Awamutu. Gross 70. Nett 58.75. Matt Hunt, John Gibson, Peter Lawry, Zac Gibson.

5th: Propowa. Gross 71. Nett 59. Bill Simeon, Allan Clark, Adam Bristow, Dion Tapper.

The highlight of the day in my team, The GC’s, apart from 10th place was watching team mate Bevan Bettridge firing in an ace on the par 3 14th with an easy 9 iron. Would you believe this was his 7th Ace. Well needed for the team score after walking off the par 5 13th with a 6.

And that’s a rap. See you at the 2021 WBOP tournament in Hamilton.

Cheers

The WBOP Committee Gavin Clarke, Marty Forsman, Rex McIntosh, Stu Browne, Mike Cannell, Mike Dyke, Mark Mansell and Roy Hyland.
