2024 Nationals, Aorangi, Pleasant Point Golf Club

2024 saw Aorangi host this year’s Nationals at a “little gem” of a golf course, Pleasant Point Golf Club, twenty minutes outside of Timaru, with all the regions staying in various motels throughout Timaru.
Some teams took advantage of the Saturday flight to play a few other courses on their way to Timaru, some taking the opportunity to start their team haggles for the ensuing four days.
The Bay Hill Bar & Restaurant hosted a few teams with great breakfasts, with other teams staying at various other motels in the Timaru township, finding their own breakfast options, the Motels used by the teams included the Harbour View, Bay City, Baywatch (no Pamela Anderson available), and the Panorama Motel, all of whom provided quality accommodation to the attending teams.

Practice Day

Sunday saw practice rounds kick off around 11 a.m. and no one can blame the weather for any bad scores, "maybe just some incorrect clubs were used"?
Our hosts had a BBQ at the clubhouse, supported by some of the local members and the hard-working barmen, Mike and Mac.
The bar was fully stocked with liquid refreshments in anticipation as the weather was a stunner.
Many thanks to Mike in particular for his support in ensuring the presentation of our results and the Melbourne Cup were successfully shown on the many TV's around the clubhouse.

By the end of the day many teams had done their homework, working out their risk and reward holes, the OB areas in which there was an abundance and where good scoring could be achieved.
The course was presented in fantastic condition by the greenskeeper Damien and his band of volunteers, who impressed all regions with true greens, playable rough, and generous fairways.
Damien has my vote for Greenskeeper of the Year!

Day One

As per the norm, photos were the first order of the day, with one particular Auckland member absent on the first call.
Was he hiding or getting in extra practice? Much appreciation goes out to Kyla Du-Plessis, (daughter of Riegardt from the Aorangi team & I might need to mention longest drive on Day 2). "That was Riegardt, not Kyla"
Thank you, Kyla, for making sure we all looked as good as possible.

Another day with good weather, along with the BBQ again supplied by the lads from J.A. Russell Ltd/Radcliffe Electrical and Klein Tools, after the Day One festivities there was a definite need for some liquid-soaking food.

He also kindly donated a prize for the longest drive on the day,  also included in the day's prizes were the two closest to the pins, RWK on hole 8 and Simpro on hole 16.

In closing
The National event alongside the regional events held around the country would struggle greatly without the support from all our sponsors and we cannot show enough appreciation for their effort and contribution.
Please remember these companies and support them when you can, find out who the local rep / Manager is and shake a hand, buy them a coffee, and engage.
This event always brings people together that have not seen each other since the previous year, but always feel like it was yesterday.
19 New members joined us this year and we had five that have attended this event over the past 40 years.
To the Aorangi Committee, Jacques, Craig, Chris, Nathan, Riegardt, Jack, Paul and Blair you ran a fantastic event, and we all look forward to the next one in 10 years’ time.

Congratulations to all our Trophy Winners, and good golfing to all for the ensuing year until we gather again at the 2025 Nationals in Hawkes Bay/Poverty Bay.
